Most people know sugar is bad for the teeth, especially if you don’t brush enough. It’s one of the first lessons any kid will get from their parents when the child is overly fond of sweets. However, some foods will destroy your enamel or hurt your gums, some of which you might not expect. Here are three types of foods you might not have known were destroying your teeth.
Fruit
Not all fruit is bad for your teeth, but some tend to be highly acidic, such as citrus fruits. Lemons and oranges and even some kinds of apples and grapes can do something similar. Acids can be detrimental to the enamel on your teeth, which can make them more sensitive. Fruit is an important part of your diet, so make sure you wash down any fruit with a glass of water or milk, so the acid doesn’t stay on your teeth.
Popcorn
The staple of every movie-going experience can cause dental problems for you if you’re not careful. Even plain popcorn can lodge in small spaces between your teeth for a long time, even after flossing and brushing. These little pockets of popcorn can become fuel for mouth bacteria, which can cause bad breath and gum disease if left unchecked. Un-popped kernels can also chip your teeth’s enamel, which can lead to fillings.
